Scope of Evaluation

This report evaluates the basic fire properties of the Flame Retardant Solutions product when tested in accordance with the SANS 10177 – Part 9 fire test protocol.

Product Description

Three plywood specimens were submitted for testing. One specimen was untreated while two specimens were treated using the Flame Retardant Solutions product.

Fire Test Procedure

A specimen measuring 1 500 mm × 150 mm was mounted vertically inside the SANS 10177 Part 9 test chimney.

A 200 mm oxidising Bunsen burner flame was positioned at an angle of 30° approximately 100 mm below the specimen and applied for ten minutes.

The material's self-extinguishing characteristics were assessed by removing the burner after 12 seconds and again after 24 seconds.

Throughout the test, temperatures were recorded using a K-type thermocouple positioned near the top of the chimney. Additional observations included flame spread, smoke production, heat contribution, flaming debris and flaming droplets.

Test Results

Three specimens were evaluated during the SANS 10177 – Part 9 fire test. Specimen 1 was untreated plywood, while Specimens 2 and 3 were treated with the Flame Retardant Solutions product.

Test Observations

Specimen 1 – Untreated Plywood

The untreated specimen ignited rapidly, with increased flaming observed after approximately one minute. Crackling sounds developed after two minutes, followed by visible smoke release. By approximately seven minutes, flames had spread around to the rear of the specimen and intensified significantly. Flaming continued until approximately thirteen minutes before subsiding, however the specimen re-ignited at approximately nineteen minutes. Flaming finally ceased after approximately thirty-three minutes, with smoke stopping approximately two minutes later.

Specimens 2 & 3 – Flame Retardant Solutions Treated

Both treated specimens required between two and three minutes before sustained ignition occurred. During flame exposure a green flame was observed while the specimens gradually charred. Smoke release from the specimen edges became evident after approximately five minutes. Once the burner was removed, no sustained flaming was observed and smoke emission ceased within approximately two to three minutes.


Conclusion

The Flame Retardant Solutions product was successfully evaluated in accordance with the SANS 10177 – Part 9 fire test protocol.

The report concludes that these results apply only to the specific plywood specimens tested using the Flame Retardant Solutions treatment. Results obtained on other substrates may differ depending on the material and application.
